The Medium Poodle — internationally often called the Moyen — is the size most people have never heard of and many families turn out to be looking for. At 35-45 cm it sits neatly between the Miniature and the Standard: robust enough for long hikes and boisterous children, compact enough for a normal house without a big garden. Temperament and energy

The Medium Poodle carries the full breed package: it ranks among the smartest dog breeds in the world, learns new things in a handful of repetitions, and is affectionate, cheerful and people-focused. Compared with the Standard it's a touch easier to satisfy physically; compared with the Toy it's noticeably less fragile and often a little less watchful. The result is a dog that hikes all day on Saturday and naps contentedly through a rainy Sunday.

Who the Medium Poodle is (and isn't) for

This is the size we'd point most families with children toward: playful enough to be a real playmate, sturdy enough that a tumble during play isn't a drama — the honest weak point of the smallest sizes. It also suits active people who find a Standard too large for their home or car. Less ideal if you specifically want a very small dog for an apartment or to carry along everywhere (look at the Miniature or Toy), or if you want maximum athletic capacity for serious sport (the Standard has more engine). And like every Poodle, it is not a dog you can leave to entertain itself all day.

Care and exercise

Plan on a solid hour of daily exercise plus play and training. The coat is identical to every other Poodle size: curly, non-shedding and always growing, so brushing several times a week and a full groom every 6-8 weeks are non-negotiable. All Poodles, the Medium included, count as relatively allergy-friendly.

Health at this size

The Medium Poodle has a reputation as perhaps the most robust of the four sizes: large enough to avoid most small-dog issues (knees, teeth), small enough to sidestep the concerns of the big dogs. That's a tendency, not a guarantee — the basics still apply. Choose a breeder who tests breeding dogs for patellar luxation, eye conditions and prcd-PRA, and who shows you the results without being asked.

What does a Medium Poodle cost?

From a reputable breeder, expect roughly the $1,000-3,000 range (about £800-2,500 / €1,000-3,000), depending on country, pedigree and health testing. Because the Medium isn't recognized by the AKC or UK Kennel Club, availability varies by country — in FCI countries it's an established size with dedicated breeders; elsewhere you may see it marketed as a "small Standard" or, less charmingly, as a made-up rarity at a premium. Medium vs. the other sizes

Doubting between sizes? The Standard offers the same temperament with more athletic capacity but also more space and exercise requirements.
