The toy poodle is the smallest of the poodle sizes recognised by the FCI, alongside the standard, medium and miniature poodle. Standing up to about 28 cm tall and weighing 2 to 4.5 kg, it is a lapdog in size only — behind the teddy-bear looks sits the mind of a centuries-old working dog. Poodles rank among the smartest dog breeds in the world, and the toy poodle is no exception.
That combination makes the toy poodle a favourite with families, seniors and people in smaller homes: it needs relatively little space, barely sheds and is easy to train. How big does a toy poodle get?
An adult toy poodle stands up to about 28 cm (11 in) at the shoulder and usually weighs between 2 and 4.5 kg (4.5–10 lbs). That makes it the smallest recognised poodle size. Note that the American Kennel Club uses a slightly different definition: a toy is any poodle of 10 inches (25.4 cm) or less.
How long do toy poodles live?
Toy poodles live 14 to 16 years on average, and reaching 18 is not unusual. Small breeds generally outlive large ones, and the toy poodle is one of the longest-living dog breeds of all.
Are toy poodles good for people with allergies?
Toy poodles barely shed and are often described as hypoallergenic. No dog is 100% allergy-free, but poodles are among the most allergy-friendly breeds there are.
How much does a toy poodle cost?
From a responsible breeder, expect roughly $1,000–$3,000 / £800–£2,500 / €1,000–€3,000 depending on pedigree, health testing and your country. Be wary of much cheaper puppies: they very often come from puppy mills.
